Adderall Litigation

Adderall was recently removed from the shelves in Canada. Canadian regulators ordered Adderall off the market because of reports that it has been linked to 20 sudden deaths and a dozen strokes, including some among children. Adderall is a drug prescribed for attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said it has evaluated the same reports as the Canadian agency but doesn't believe the data warrants similar action in the United States.
The drug is made by Shire Pharmaceuticals Group PLC, based in Basingstoke, England, and is sold in Canada and the United States. A related immediate-release form of Adderall XR, sold simply as Adderall, is sold in the United States but has not been approved for sale in Canada. An estimated 11,000 patients are prescribed Adderall XR in Canada.
Shire released a statement from its chief executive Matthew Emmens after Canada pulled the drug from the markets stating that the company "remains confident in the safety and efficacy" of the drug.
About 700,000 people take Adderall XR in the United States, with about 300,000 more using Adderall.
A USDA's safety advisory panel has recommended that several drugs widely used to treat ADHD, including Adderall, should carry a prominent "black box" warning because of reports that they may have caused sudden deaths or serious complications. A "black box" warning is the FDA's highest warning. The US panel voted 8 to 7 to call for the labeling change after reviewing reports of several dozen patients who suffered cardiac arrest, toxic reactions or sudden death while using the medications.
Curt Furberg, a professor of public health sciences at North Carolina's Wake Forest University Medical School is a member of the panel and voted for the warning.
U.S. sales of Adderall reached $140 million for the third quarter of 2004 ($600 million annually).
